At the market, there is a man with a parakeet. Visitors, or rather customers, pay money to the bird-owner, when they want to have their fortune told by the bird. “Set an intention, ask a question silently, and the bird will deliver your answer in the words of the great Hafez!” The bird hops on to the merchant’s hand and picks a poem from a box. The merchant reads out the poem to the customer and hands over the printed Persian verses. Disease, at some point, made the bird lose her wings, so the merchant replaced them with delicately engineered wings, with feathers made of clear glass. When a German collector offered a serious amount of money to purchase the parakeet, the merchant agreed, yet the bird did not. Whilst plotting to assassinate the collector during the transaction, the bird dies. Her rigid body becomes the monument against her own exploitation.
